How to Pressure Wash a Driveway & Clean Concrete the Right Way
Now we're moving to a surface where pressure actually plays a much bigger role.
Concrete is strong.
It's durable.
And compared with vinyl siding, concrete can usually handle significantly more cleaning pressure.
But here's the mistake:
Concrete is strong, but it is NOT impossible to damage.
We've seen homeowners assume that because concrete is hard, they can put the strongest tip on their pressure washer, hold it close to the driveway, and blast away.
That can leave permanent lines, uneven cleaning, or damage to the surface.
So we're going to approach concrete using the same Perfectly Clean™ principle we've used throughout this guide:
Use the right process—not simply the most pressure.
What Makes a Driveway Dirty?
Before cleaning concrete, look at what you're trying to remove.
A driveway or sidewalk may have:
Dirt
Green organic growth
Black organic buildup
Mildew or mold-like growth
Mud
Tire marks
Oil
Rust
Fertilizer stains
Irrigation stains
Leaves and organic debris
Other specialty stains
And here's something important:
These are not all the same problem.
Normal dirt and organic growth may respond very well to a standard concrete-cleaning process.
Oil, rust, fertilizer stains, and other specialty stains may require different products and additional treatment.
Don't assume that increasing pressure will remove every stain.
Step 1: Check the Age of the Concrete
Before you start, find out how old the concrete is.
This matters.
Fresh concrete needs time to cure and strengthen.
At Pro Wash Pressure Washing, our operating standard is simple:
If the concrete is less than 3 years old, we do not use high pressure on it.
That's intentionally conservative.
The last thing we want to do is permanently mark someone's newer driveway just to get it clean.
If you're washing your own concrete and you don't know its age or condition, be cautious.
A dirty driveway can be cleaned later.
Damaged concrete is much harder to fix.
Step 2: Inspect the Concrete
Walk the entire area before starting.
Look for:
Cracks
Chipping
Flaking
Weak areas
Existing pressure-washing marks
New concrete
Painted areas
Sealed concrete
Decorative concrete
Rust
Oil
Fertilizer stains
Drainage problems
Take pictures if necessary.
You're trying to understand the surface before you change it.
Step 3: Clear the Area
Remove anything that doesn't need to be there.
That may include:
Cars • Toys • Furniture • Planters • Doormats • Trash cans • Decorations • Loose debris
You want a clear work area.
If there is a lot of loose dirt, leaves, pine straw, or other debris, remove that first.
Don't make the pressure washer do a broom's job.
Step 4: Think About Where the Water Will Go
This is something beginners often forget.
You're about to put a lot of water onto the concrete.
Where is it going?
Look for:
Low spots
Drains
Grass
Flower beds
Garage doors
Entry doors
Streets
Neighboring property
Areas where water pools
Planning your direction before cleaning makes the entire job easier.
If water starts pooling, you don't want to keep pushing dirty water back over an area you've already cleaned.
Step 5: Pre-Wet Nearby Plants
Just like with house washing, think about the landscaping around the concrete.
If cleaning solution will be used near:
Grass
Flowers
Bushes
Landscaping
wet those areas first.
The goal is to clean the concrete without creating another problem around it.
Step 6: Pre-Treat When Needed
For concrete with organic buildup, a professional may apply an appropriate cleaning treatment before using the surface cleaner.
This is called a pre-treatment.
Think back to what we learned about house washing.
Chemistry can help loosen and treat the contamination so the equipment doesn't have to do all the work by force.
The exact product and concentration depend on the condition of the concrete and what you're trying to remove.
If you're a homeowner using a concrete-cleaning product, follow the product label rather than guessing at chemical mixtures.
Step 7: What Is a Surface Cleaner?
If you've ever seen a professional pressure-washing crew cleaning a driveway, you may have seen a round machine that looks almost like a floor cleaner.
That's a surface cleaner.

Underneath the round housing is a spinning spray bar.
Instead of cleaning a driveway one narrow line at a time with a pressure-washing wand, the surface cleaner cleans a larger, more controlled path.
For large flat areas, this can make the job:
Faster • More even • More consistent
But a surface cleaner can still leave poor results if it is used incorrectly.
Why Does My Driveway Have Pressure-Washing Lines?
You've probably seen this before.
A driveway gets pressure washed, but afterward you can see:
Lines.
Stripes.
Swirls.
Light and dark sections.
These can happen when the operator:
Moves too quickly
Moves inconsistently
Misses sections
Doesn't overlap passes correctly
Uses improper pressure
Holds a wand too close
Uses the wrong technique
The goal is not simply to move the surface cleaner across every part of the driveway.
The goal is to create an evenly cleaned surface.
Step 8: Walk at the Right Speed
This takes practice.
Move too quickly and you may leave dirt behind.
Move extremely slowly and you're wasting time and may overwork the surface.
A good rule is:
Walk slowly enough to remove the dirt, but fast enough to keep moving steadily.
Watch the concrete behind you.
The surface tells you whether you're moving at the right speed.
If you're leaving obvious dirty sections:
Slow down.
If the surface is cleaning easily and evenly:
Maintain that pace.
Step 9: Work in Sections
Don't randomly walk around the driveway.
Create a system.
For larger concrete areas, working in manageable sections makes it easier to control:
Cleaning
Water
Dirty runoff
Overlap
Rinsing
Inspection
A section might be roughly 10–20 feet, depending on the layout and conditions.
Finish the section.
Then move forward.
Step 10: Overlap Your Passes
Think about mowing grass.
If you leave a gap between every pass of the lawn mower, you'll have strips of tall grass.
Concrete cleaning is similar.
Each pass should overlap the previous pass enough to avoid leaving dirty lines between cleaned areas.
Keep your movement controlled and consistent.
Don't race.
Don't make random circles.
Follow a pattern.
Step 11: Cross-Clean When Needed
On heavily soiled concrete, cleaning in only one direction may not produce the most even result.
A second pass from a different direction can help.
For example:
First pass:
↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑
Second pass:
→ → → → →
This is sometimes called cross-passing.
You're approaching the surface from two directions instead of one.
The goal is a more uniform clean.
Step 12: Clean the Edges
A surface cleaner cannot always reach every inch.
You may need to carefully clean:
Edges
Corners
Steps
Areas beside walls
Areas around posts
Tight spaces
This is where a pressure-washing wand can be useful.
But be careful.
Don't hold a high-pressure stream extremely close to the concrete.
That's how permanent wand marks can happen.
Try to match the appearance of the edge work to the larger area you cleaned with the surface cleaner.
Step 13: Move the Dirty Water
Once you've cleaned a section, you need to get rid of the dirt you just removed.
Otherwise, you're simply moving dirty water around the driveway.
Use your rinse water to push:
Dirt + debris + loosened organic material
toward an appropriate drainage area.
A push broom can also help move pooled water when needed.
On professional jobs with significant pooling, specialized water-removal equipment can make this easier.
Step 14: Rinse Thoroughly
Once the surface cleaning is finished, rinse the entire area.
Look for:
Dirty water
Mud
Loose debris
Lines
Missed corners
Dirty edges
Areas that need another pass
Don't judge the job only by the area directly in front of you.
Step back.
Look across the entire driveway.
Step 15: Post-Treat When Appropriate
Sometimes concrete looks clean after surface cleaning but still has light organic discoloration.
A professional may use an appropriate post-treatment after the mechanical cleaning.
A post-treatment can help address remaining organic growth and create a more even finished appearance.
Again, homeowners should follow the label of any concrete-cleaning product they use rather than copying an unknown professional chemical mixture.
Chemistry should be intentional.
Not guessed.
What About Oil Stains?
Oil is different from algae.
This is where expectations matter.
If motor oil has soaked deeply into porous concrete, normal pressure washing may improve the appearance without completely removing the stain.
A degreasing or specialty treatment may be required.
And even then:
Complete removal is not always possible.
The longer a contaminant has been absorbed into concrete, the more difficult it may be to remove.
What About Rust?
Rust is another specialty stain.
If you see orange or reddish-brown discoloration, don't simply attack it with more pressure.
Rust removal often requires specialty chemistry.
The same is true for certain:
Fertilizer stains
Irrigation stains
Battery stains
Mineral deposits
This brings us right back to one of the most important lessons in this book:
Identify the stain before choosing the cleaning method.
Be Careful Around Garage Doors
When cleaning a driveway, it's easy to become focused on the concrete and forget what's at the end of it.
Your garage door is not concrete.
Be careful when working near:
Garage-door seals
Painted surfaces
Siding
Trim
Entry doors
Don't aim concentrated pressure into the bottom seal of the garage door.
The goal is to clean the driveway—not send water into the garage.
Watch Your Feet
A pressure washer is powerful equipment.
Never aim a pressure-washing stream at:
Your feet
Your hands
Another person
Pets
High-pressure water can cause serious injury.
Wear appropriate footwear and personal protective equipment, follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions, and keep other people away from the work area.
